April Safety Spotlight: Stop Work Authority in Action

At RAE, safety is not about pushing through challenges, it’s about recognizing hazards and taking action before someone gets hurt. Recently, Katrina Ringgold demonstrated exactly what that looks like in action.
Katrina exercised Stop Work Authority when she identified a risk associated with moving 1,000 lb. coils using the current cart configuration. Instead of continuing under difficult and potentially unsafe conditions, she made the decision to pause the task and speak up, preventing a situation that could have led to injury.
As an immediate precaution, a temporary 4-person team was implemented when pushing coil carts inside the shop. This allowed time to properly evaluate both the equipment and the process.
After review, it was confirmed that:
The current cart configuration is safe when used properly
Fixed wheels on one side provide stability
Swivel wheels on the opposite side allow for controlled steering when positioned correctly
A forklift is required when moving these carts outside
This evaluation ensured that the process remains safe while reinforcing proper usage and awareness.
Katrina’s actions reflect the kind of judgment, accountability, and leadership we strive for across RAE. By choosing to stop and reassess, she helped protect not only herself but her entire team.
In recognition of her commitment to safety, Katrina will receive a $100 award.

We also want to recognize team members who have been identified for working safely. These individuals received positive Safety Tickets from leadership and the Safety Team and will receive a $25 award.
