Workplace Safety Update: Recent Incidents & Lessons Learned

On Monday, February 3, 2025, a team member sustained an injury while drilling holes for Schrader valves into eight pieces of copper pipe. In an effort to complete the task quickly, they held the pipes on top of their toolbox while drilling. Unfortunately, on the eighth pipe, the drill bit slipped and punctured their left thumb, nearly all the way through.

First aid was administered, and the team member was sent home to recover. However, the following morning, they experienced numbness in their thumb and decided to seek medical attention. The doctor provided work restrictions, officially making this an OSHA recordable injury.

YTD Incidents:

  • Near Misses: 11

  • First Aid Injuries: 9

  • Recordable Injuries: 3*

  • Lost Time Injuries: 0

*The second OSHA recordable injury of the year occurred on January 24, 2025, due to a chemical incident in the Coil Shop. A team member continued to experience a headache towards the end of their shift and chose to seek medical attention as a precaution. They were prescribed medication for symptoms related to the chemical exposure and have since fully recovered.

Lessons Learned:

  • Always secure workpieces on a stable surface before drilling to prevent injuries.

  • Prioritize safety over speed—rushing can lead to serious accidents.

  • If you experience persistent symptoms after a workplace incident, seek medical attention.

  • Report injuries and incidents immediately to ensure proper care and documentation.

Safety is a top priority, and we appreciate everyone's efforts to maintain a secure work environment. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the Safety Team.

Stay safe and work smart!
